Hocking Hills Cabins : What's So Special About Hocking Hills

Located in the south-east corner of Ohio state lies the protected region called the Hocking hills. It is a thinly populated but densely wooded region that boasts of cascading water falls, creeks fed by spring water, rugged slopes and cool hollows. For years now city dwellers from nearby towns have been taking refuge from the hot summer months in its secluded and cool retreats.

The name of the region is a shortened form of the name Hock Hocking, which in the language of the Delaware Indians means a bottle. This region hides the wild side of the state of Ohio. It is full of splendid but interesting scenery and also has some of the wildest views in Ohio. At one time it was a hunting ground for bears which used to hibernate in the region’s many caverns and grottos. These caverns also contained material for making gunpowder. One of the better known caverns is called the Ash Cave since it has large piles of ash.

What's So Special ...

The present topographical features of Ohio are due to the depredations of the glaciers during the last ice age. The glaciers flattened most of Ohio leaving the present region untouched. The glaciers never reached the place. That is what makes this place so special. It is believed that the present extreme topography of the region is due to the Blackhand Sandstone that is thick, hard and weather resistant, and very conducive to the formation of cliffs, gorges and rock shelters.

Planning Your Vacation

Your trip must be planned well in advance with the right type of information. The region offers an abundance of various recreational activities, things to do and things to see in a magnificent natural setting. For your enjoyment there are hiking trails and magnificent state parks. You can canoe in the Hocking River and discover fishing in Lake Logan. If you enjoy rock climbing and rappelling there are several sites for these sports.

The region grows a number of uncommon as well as rare plants. There are also plants like the Canadian yew, big leaf magnolia and many others that grow in this place even though they are out of range.

The region is full of protected state parks, forests and nature reserves. Perhaps the biggest of them is the Hocking Hills state park that is embedded within the Hocking state forest. The rock formations of the park display spectacular features like deep gorges, waterfalls and large rock shelters. For accommodation, there are around 200 camping site spread throughout the park. There are flush toilets and hot water facilities in these grounds. There are also other amenities like vending machines, camp store and pools. Other activities include sightseeing, picnicking and photography.

The region has other natural attractions also, such as, Hocking Hills State forest, Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve, Lake Logan State Park and Rockbridge State Nature Reserve.

The area is truly a testimony to the awesome power of nature. One gasps at the miracle behind the creation of gorgeous cliffs, gorges reaching dizzying heights and the water cascading on them. Breathtaking as the scenery is, no less thrilling are the densely wooded forests that surround well appointed accommodations.

Hocking is still a place where you can hear the crickets chirp, fireflies light the evening up and a million stars light the night sky up. It is one of the few wilderness areas left in the United States.

How To Rent A Cabin?

Many state parks rent a cabin during the holiday season. Cabin rentals are also handled by real estate companies.

When you have discovered the property you would like to rent, approach the owner or the property manager by telephone or e-mail. Tell him about the dates and some details about your group like, the number of members, whether you have children and whether you will be bringing along pets.

Once you have settled the rates and fixed the dates of renting decide on the mode of payment and cancellation procedures. These can vary a lot. Some owners or companies prefer dealing by mail. You will have to send them your check by mail and they will send all that they have to send by mail. Others prefer credit card transactions. Remember to get the cancellation terms in writing.

Ask if the owner has anything to say and take his number, to be used only during emergencies.

Get to know out the details for checking out and checking in. Ask them about seasonal provisions like hot water during winters. If you have rented a mountain cabin then inquire whether you need to bring your own firewood.

Before taking possession of the cottage check the electricity and water supply. Make sure appliances like the heater and the air-conditioner are working. If you find your cottage dirty and in a mess, contact the owner or the property manager to set things right. Do not forget to check the kitchen facilities since in these places you must have a fully functioning kitchen.

Find out what kind of facilities are available in the neighborhood. After all you will need to buy groceries in order to eat.

Leave the property as neat and clean as it was when it was handed to you and follow all the instructions in the terms of agreement.

To be on the safe side take out a travel insurance if you will be staying in an expensive cabin, or if the cancellation terms are too restrictive.

What Is The Best Time To Visit?

In spring the weather warms up to between 40 and 70 degree F. Summers can be very hot and humid with temperatures touching 90 degree F. The temperature begins to fall in mid-September. This is the best time to visit Hocking Hills as the humidity is low and the air crisp.
